Let’s take a look at reliability. This is an issue with many web hosts, no matter if it is small or large. I’ve been with multiple companies over the time, and I have to say all of them except for my current host had noticeable downtimes. If you are running a business, frequent service interruptions, no matter if you notice them yourself or not, are a big problem. To find the search volume, you will need to be able to access this data from your favorite search engine. For example Google has the AdWords Keyword Tool.

Let’s say that there are 100 searches preformed each month for these warm stylish hats.

Once we know exactly how many people search each month, we will divide the number of websites by the number of searchers. Or 10 websites divided by 100 searchers. This turns out to be 10 searchers for every 1 website. If you were to actually find a topic with his low of competition you would be very lucky indeed.

Website creation flows from this step, and I would definitely suggest that you take the time to plan out your sites topic throughly.

Once you have your research complete, you’re ready for the next step of website creation, the domain name.

The domain name is very important in website creation because it gives your website a better chance at ranking higher in the search results for your chosen topic. Expanding on the previous example, let’s create a domain name for our website. If www.lumberjackhats.com was available, you would want to take that for your website creation. But seeing as most two word domain names have been taken, you might need to get more creative. For example, www.stylishlumberjackhats.com.

As I have already mentioned, this is very important because part of a website’s relevance comes from how well the content on the page matches the domain name. If your website creation and domain name are completely unrelated, you will have to work much harder for your place in the search engines.

While this is not an impossible feat, it does raise the difficulty level quite a bit. And especially in this early state of learning website creation you have more important things to focus on.

Planning is as important when you build a website as when you build a home. But how do you plan how to build a website?

Well, you surely have an idea for a website or you wouldn’t have looked for how to build one. Let’s say that you want to build a website on “mittens”. This becomes our primary keyword. Everything else will flow for this one word. How? Simple, with ten minutes of research we can see if this is a good niche to enter or if we should look for another one.

First we need to know how many websites out there specially cater to the mittens crowd. We do this by performing an exact search or the word “mittens”. To simplify this guide on how to make a website, let’s say there are 100 websites specifically for mittens. Wow, this niche isn’t very full.

Now before we go any further, you’re not ready to start making your website just yet. We need to see how many searches are performed each month for “mittens”. Remember, look for the exact number of searches performed rather than the broad match to ensure your data is accurate.

This is one mistake that a lot of people make when they first start learning how to make a website.

In our example here we find that exactly 200 people look for our keyword each month. That means that there are two searchers for every website out there.

Great, now we know that if we were to make a website on this topic, we would have a really good chance to rank when a user performs a search.

As you can see, this can really make an impact on how well your website can perform.

If you’ve spent any amount of time online, there is a good chance you’ve given this some thought. But how do you make a website? What do you need to know, and what do you need to get before you make a website? Don’t worry, because that is what I intend to cover in this beginner’s article.

First, lets assume you want to make money from your website rather than simply learning how to make a website. Why do I make this distinction? Because they are two completely different topics, and the first one is usually the one most people have in mind when they learn how to make a website.

Next, let’s assume that you want to learn how to make a website, an actual website, one that you have complete control over and lets you keep 100% of the returns. I have already written articles on the subject of content driven hubs, and they lie outside of the topic: How to Make A Website.

To recap, such sites are part of the current Web 2.0 trend that allow you to put your content up on the web. In return the site will share a percentage of the revenue the page generates or take a percentage of your sales. This is vastly different than learning how to make a website, because you do not control the site, and you’re often limited in how it is monetized. For example, if you’re planning on selling your products or services, these solutions generally won’t work for you.

But enough on that subject, lets learn how to make a website!

What is a website to you? Many people look at a website and think that it is simply some text, graphics and images thrown together on the page. But there is much more to web development than static (X)HTML, and if you want to learn how to make a website, you will need to go to the next level. PHP. You might have heard of it or you’ve seen the file extension .php on some web pages, but it isn’t until you write your first page in PHP that its powerful and flexible nature becomes apparent.

Now I know what you’re thinking, this is all over my head, I don’t want to spend X years learning how to code my own website. And if using a HTML editor is no good, what’s left? I want to learn how to make a website!

Thankfully, learning how to make a website is much simpler than it used to be. In fact the days of static pages and web hosts charging an arm and a leg for more sophisticated server features are also coming to an end. Today PHP is a given in most plans, and access to MySQL databases is common place.

Even five years ago features like these would have frequently been tucked away in more expensive premium plans. But can now be had for as little as $4.95 a month.

When I see prices like these I have to chuckle. You see, when I was learning how to make a website for the first time almost a decade ago I was paying much more for a bare bones plan, with next to no disk space and only slightly better bandwidth. For those learning how to make a website, there has never been a better time.

The learning curve, while still steep, has more footholds and resources, the cost is lower, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Another big improvement is the availability of content management systems (CMS) and blogging platforms like WordPress (which outperforms most CMS in my opinion).

And that is where our journey on how to make a website will take us.

There isn’t even a chance that you haven’t heard about blogging, not if you’re learning how to build a website. And that is what WordPress is for. But for those resourceful users like yourself, it is much more, and when you want it to be, it is a CMS for your website.

You see, while the server is a complex and unmanageable beast for the new webmaster, WordPress sits on top of your server, a thin layer that lets you access its advanced features. Both through its powerful structure and through the ability to further strengthen it with free and commercial themes and plugins. Though in all fairness, a lot of the really exceptional themes and plugins are free.

I have seen people struggle to learn how to make websites switch to WordPress and have sites setup and promoting their products over the course of a weekend. And while this may not be the average, it shows what making a website has become.

Leveraging what others have done, and the knowledge that they share is what the Internet is all about. Learning how to make a website where your voice can be heard and your products purchased has leveled the playing field. Making an ecommerce website has become easier, and more affordable. It is no longer an area of the Internet where big brands broadcast their message without competition. The Internet has become the great equalizer.

Learning how to make a website is crucial, but it can be as simple as registering a domain name, acquiring web hosting, installing WordPress and picking out a theme that fits your tastes and market.

To ensure that you have a chance to rank, you need to research how much competition you will be competing against. This is done by comparing how many websites there are to the search volume, or amount of people looking for your keyword. We will do this by performing an exact search. I would suggest using Google, since more than 70% of all searches on the Internet are preformed through them. Exact searches are performed by placing your keywords in quotation marks, example “my keywords”.

This will return the number of websites with that exact phrase. Note the number of websites down, you’ll need it in a second. The next thing that you need to do is find out how much search volume there is for your keyword. If you’ve used Google to find out how many competing websites there are, you can use their AdWords Keyword Tool to find the search volume. What is the search volume? It is the approximate number of searches preformed for each keyword per month.

Now that we know the amount of searchers, we will be able to calculate if this is a good niche to build a website in. Divide the number of websites by the search volume. Websites/Search Volume = Competition. If there are 500 websites and 100 searchers, there would be 5 sites for each potential visitor. The more websites there are for each visitor, the longer it will take you to rank for more competitive keywords.

From there you can begin to build your website. The next step is registering a domain name with your keyword in the actual URL. For example purposes let us say the key word is “tap dancing”, the corresponding domain could look like: tapdancingshoestobeattheblues.com Since that is really hard to read you could also use a hyphenated version: tap-dancing-shoes-to-beat-the-blues.com There, isn’t that much easier to read?

Now let us start building a website! In today’s online environment there is an almost limitless amount of resources available on the coding aspect of how to build a website. But I am going to give you a little tip in that regard that might save you a couple of years.

If you would have set out to build a website even five years ago, your learning curve would have been much steeper, but you would have found plenty of resources teaching you how to code from scratch. If you started to build a ten years ago, those resources would have been gone and you would have had to buy a book to learn the basics or go to college.

Today there are more options available than ever before, and you can build a website with advanced features over the course of a weekend. Now I know what you’re think… How can I build a website like that, I don’t even know how to code? Well, on today’s Internet you don’t need to code to build a website. There are many different solutions that provide the user with a friendly interface, sitting like a thin layer between you and the server. These content management systems and blogging systems allow you to interact and build a website directly from your browser.

The one that I recommend the most is WordPress. It is completely free when you run it from your own web hosting account and is the most stable and secure out of all of the systems I’ve evaluated. No wonder why it is the most popular solution for people that want to blog and build a website today.

Better yet, it can be enhanced and changed to fit your tastes and needs through the huge selection of free plugins and themes. These themes and plugins are accessed from the same “backend” that you build a website from. This takes the pressure of keeping things updated from weighing too heavily on your shoulders and allows you to use your time to build a website.

The next piece needed to build a website is web hosting. Just as your domain name gives you an address online, people need something to see once they get there. This is where web hosting comes in.

And this is where I want to place a word of caution when you build a website. Web hosts are not all the same, and they may not all fit your needs. Besides the difference of hosting costs, some only supply you with minimal server resources suitable for running simple websites. This can be a major headache for both you and your visitors if you build a website that is more than a simple static page.

Why? Well, there are several factors that are directly affected by this problem. If you build a website that is meant to be seen, your chances of this happening go down greatly if your website runs slow. You only have 5 seconds to capture a persons attention when they first come to your website. That means you have a very short window to make your message clear and encourage them to read further. If your website takes longer than 10 seconds to load you’ll also lose the visitor.

What does that mean for you when you build a website to sell a product or service? Lost customers. Couple that with the fact that search engines will begin ranking websites in part by how fast they load, and sub par web hosting translates into wasted money. I have been with more than a few web hosting companies over the years and have used a little trick to evaluate their service. I am sharing this with you now because I wish I would have used this when I built my first website.

When you register, only register for one month, this is the shortest period of time they’ll generally let you make an account for. After the month is coming close to an end and you’ve had a chance to evaluate them, rate how happy you are with their service. If you’re still not sure, renew for another month or find another web host to move your website to.

This might sound like extra work when you build a website, but let me put it this way. Would you really want to be locked into a year long contract (sometimes longer) with a web hosting company that you’re unhappy with? A lot of people get pulled into these longer contracts when they learn how to build a website because they are given special offers as new customers or when they sign up for long periods of time.

And while it may appear at first like you’re saving some money when you build a website on their server, if it doesn’t meet your needs, you’re left with two options. One, tough it out and watch your efforts go to waste because of slow performance, or two, purchase additional hosting somewhere else.

It is important not to get sucked into the sales pitch or the chance to save a few dollars unless you know and trust the company. Building a website should be your primary goal, not dealing with a web host’s limitations. In my opinion this is one of the most important steps when you build a website. Most of the other problems you encounter can be ironed out if you are willing to spend a little effort working on them. This is the only one that stands to cost you the most money.
